COVERAGE CHAPTER / THE PLAN DECIDES
The ingredient is not the whole coverage answer
Coverage can change with the reason a medicine is prescribed, the plan's drug list, and whether the plan requires permission before it pays.

Medicare has two different paths
As of September 2026, Medicare's drug benefit still will not cover a medicine prescribed only to lose weight.
If that medicine is prescribed for a different approved purpose, such as treating diabetes or cutting the risk of serious heart problems, Medicare can pay. Each plan still decides whether and how it pays.
A separate temporary Medicare program charges eligible adults $50 a month for selected weight medicines and is scheduled to run through the end of 2027.
The questions that get a usable answer
- Does the plan's drug list include this exact product?
- Does the plan cover it for this diagnosis?
- Does the plan require permission before it pays?
- What is the cost after the deductible?
- If the medicine is bought with cash, does that count toward the deductible or the yearly out-of-pocket limit?
MYTH / TAP TO CHECK
If a drug has federal approval, every health plan must pay for it.
THE FACT
FDA approval lets a company sell a drug for the uses listed on its label. It does not force every insurance plan to pay for it.
